MINING ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Mining Engineering Department

Mining Engineering as an engineering discipline involves the practice, the theory, the science, the technology, and the application of extracting and processing minerals from a naturally occurring environment.

Mining Engineers provide fundamental inputs to the development of society in the form of raw materials required for energy production, steel making, manufacturing of cement, and other vital ingredients like copper, aluminum, etc.

Future Prospects

As a mining engineer, you’ll ensure the safe and efficient development of mines and other surface and underground operations. The role combines an understanding of the effects of these structures on their surrounding environment with technical knowledge and management skills.

Specialization

  • Rock Mechanics and Ground Control: Rock mechanics is a theoretical and applied science of the mechanical behavior of rock and rock masses; compared to geology
  • Mine Environment and Ventilation: The environmental impact of mining includes erosion, formation of sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, and contamination of soil, groundwater, and surface water by chemicals from mining processes.
  • Mine Safety and Risk Analysis: Risk analysis can be defined in many different ways, and much of the definition depends on how risk analysis relates to other concepts.
  • Mine Planning and Design: The process should encompass strategic, business, and operational mine planning and fully integrate all stakeholders – including management.

Programme Educational Objectives

  • Our students will demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the behavior of rock materials under varying excavation conditions and their impact on engineering design and mine operations.
  • Our students will develop the engineering ability to manage any type of mining operations at all levels of management effectively and be able to solve engineering problems fundamental to Mining Engineering.
  • Our students will be able to design excavations pertinent to the safe and economic exploitation of mineral resources by both surface and underground mining methods and possess a fundamental understanding of production sequencing, mine optimization, and equipment selection.
  • Our students will be able to analyze and evaluate the economics of mining and excavation projects, including economic feasibility, mine valuation, and cash flow analysis, and understand the economic implications of mine design and operations.
  • Our students will possess the fundamental skills associated with project management, supervision, and decision-making processes.
  • Our students will gain knowledge and experience in the application of engineering principles to the exploitation of mineral resources and construction of various structures on and within the rock mass.

Mining Engineering Society

For the overall development of the students, the department is keen on planning and implementing activities that will provide opportunities to every student for self-development. The students undertake these activities under the student body of the Mining Engineering Society.

Apart from academic activities programs like technical quizzes, paper presentation competitions, project competitions, and design and testing competitions, software competitions are organized at the department level and institute level. The students of the institute are actively participating in various co-curricular activities throughout the academic year.

Apart from institutional programs students actively participate in various co-curricular programs organized at intercollegiate, interuniversity, state, and national levels. E- classroom is available for co-curricular like paper presentations, seminars, conferences, quizzes, debates, etc. the facilities like overhead projectors, and LCD projectors are available for students.
