The Journey of D. Subodh Singh: Bringing the Silicon Valley Spirit to Bhopal
Every pioneer eventually hits a crossroads. For D. Subodh Singh, that moment arrived in the late 1990s.
By all standard measures, he was already living the classic American dream. With a degree in Electronics Engineering, a Master’s in Computer Science, and an MBA in Finance from the University of Michigan, he was thriving in the U.S. as a tech entrepreneur. He ran ventures like eNetworks and Net IP Corporation during the peak of the digital revolution.
Yet, he kept looking back at his home state of Madhya Pradesh, noticing a huge gap. While Western universities were adopting cutting-edge technologies and modern teaching methods, talented young people in Central India lacked access to real hands-on training, modern tools, and practical exposure.
So, Subodh Singh did something most people in his position wouldn’t do: he packed his bags, left his life in the U.S., and decided to build those opportunities back home.
The Vision Takes Root (2000)
When Subodh Singh returned to Bhopal at the turn of the millennium, he brought more than just capital—he brought a new way of thinking about education.
In 2000, alongside a group of like-minded NRIs and technocrats, he established the Taramathi Education Society and laid the foundation for the NRI Group of Institutions (NGI). The name was a direct nod to the Indian diaspora’s effort to contribute back to their roots.

His goal wasn’t just to start another degree-granting college. He wanted a campus that combined the discipline of Indian education with the practical, hands-on style of top American universities.
Building on Raisen Road
Turning 25 acres of land on Raisen Road into an active educational hub wasn’t easy. In the early days, it took constant work and problem-solving. Subodh Singh used his background in engineering and business to build the institution from the ground up, focusing on a few core ideas:
Technology Combined with Values: Advanced labs and digital infrastructure were paired with strong ethical values and personal development.
The Tutor-Guardian (TG) System: Knowing that moving away for college can be tough on young students, he set up a mentorship system where faculty members personally guided small groups of students through both academic and personal challenges.
Connecting Classrooms to Industry: Instead of relying solely on textbooks, he set up early collaborations with organizations like IEEE, ISTE, and institutions like IIT Bombay to expose students to actual industry practices.
Over time, the campus expanded well beyond engineering to include Pharmacy, Nursing, Management, Law, Paramedical Sciences, and school education through the NRI Global Discovery School.
Two Decades Later
Over twenty years later, what started as a single campus on Raisen Road has grown into a major educational center in Central India, educating thousands of students across various disciplines.
Under Singh’s leadership, NGI has secured national accreditations, earned top regional rankings, and served as a nodal center for major technical initiatives.
However, those who work with him note that his focus remains on student outcomes—taking students from small towns across Madhya Pradesh and helping them build the skills and confidence needed to land global tech jobs or launch their own ventures.
